I have had discussions with people over here wanting to know more about our African culture (most especially the Nigerian version of it all). I decided to write a post on marriage because it has remained a reoccurring question, everyone wants to know how it’s done. Nuptial ties can be the most simple yet elaborate event in this environment, slow dancing and silent cheers – but I trust the owambe (party) flavour that turns the vibe on in Nigeria.

Well, marriage, signifies the coming together of two different families accompanied with a lot of feasting and jiving. In Africa, the girl child is solely and practically  trained to aspire to become a MRS. It is an obvious fact that marriage is a big deal among Nigerians, because to the girl’s family their daughter just gained a new level of social acceptance, and an accelerated access into the world of motherhood. The big question is what are the things to look for before you get married:

  1. Graduation: For the girl, it is usually faster; so being a graduate of a tertiary institution is a milestone and once you have achieved that, there is a reminder that you know what your marriage is next.
  2. Work: When you start working and start bringing a few bucks home, your parents just think marriage should be the next step automatically. This affects both sexes.
  3. Age: Once you are above the age of 20, the family (both nuclear and extended family) starts making funny jokes about when they would meet their guest. Well, it is usually earlier for girl than for the guy. It’s often believed that she fades like an over-bleached clothe unlike the boy who can pick up his life in his 30s.
  4. Constant relationship: If you have had a constant relationship for a while, the next question is so what are you waiting for?
  5. Marriage Prayers: When morning devotion is coming and prayers are said in form of subtle reminders, then the time is near.

This is just some of the most prominent signs that you are ready for marriage. But beyond this list, be certain in you heart about the right time and do what you know is best for you with the help of God. I have learnt over time that marriage is not a one size fits all something.
